White-Point Mythimna albipuncta

The White-Point has a wingspan of 36 to 44 mm. The basic colour is orange brown usually, but there is a lot of variation. Characteristic is the white point it is named after. This spot actually is part of the kidney spot, but normally the kidney spot is hardly visible, except for the white spot. The only look-a-like is the Clay, which has a similar spot, but never as white and as clear as the White-Spot's spot. The Clay is also bigger and common over most of Britain.

The caterpillar is brownish with lighter lines and a brownish head. This species is double-brooded in Southern Europe. It overwinters in the larval stage. The larvae are found on grasses. The adults are often found resting in grasses as well.

In Britain this is a migrant moth, appearing each year in Southern England mainly. The numbers greatly vary from year to year. Caterpillars are found occasionally and sometimes the species seems to settle itself, but never for more than two years on end. In Holland no caterpillars have ever be found, so in Holland and the south of England the northern border of its territory runs.
