Allantus species

Identifying this larva as that of a species within the genus Allantus is easy. But naming the exact species is almost impossible. Many larva in this genus are almost identical. In this case the larva was found on a Rose, which often is sufficient to name the species. In this case it is not, for most of the Allantus species are associated with plants in the rose family. So from this picture it is impossible to say what species this exactly is.

Best known species is the Curled Rose Sawfly (Allantus cinctus), which sometimes is a pest on roses and strawberries. But there are some 12 species of Allantus in the Netherlands and probably the same goes for Britain.

So alas, no further information can be given at this moment about this animal.
