House Mosquito Culex pipiens

The House Mosquito is a very common species. It readily puts its snout in humans, but it is more interested in birds, actually. Known as the Northern House Mosquito in the USA. As males do not bite it is good to be able to tell the difference between the two. In mosquitoes that is much easier than you might expect. Males have huge, plumelike antennae. The antennae of the females are simple, wire-like constructions. The male is in the bottom picture.
