Cylindroiulus caeruleocinctus

Cylindroiulus caeruleocinctus is a rather big species, reaching a length of some 30 mm. It is a robust animal, brown or almost black in colour. Juveniles are of a lighter shade of brown. It has no tail. This combined with its size makes it one of the easier identifiable millipedes. This species may live up to 5 years. It feeds on debris, but also lives underground eating roots and turnips. It reached the USA and Canada where it is considered to be a pest in the growing of carrots and sweet potatoes. Cylindroiulus caeruleocinctus is a common species all over Britain, often seen in gardens.
