Melanostoma mellinum

Melanostoma mellinum looks like many other species of smaller Hover Flies. It is a species which is very common and often more abundant in your garden that you would believe, but it is very unobtrusive indeed. Common throughout Europe, including all of Britain. Here it is photographed in an Evening Primrose. The flowers of this plant provide excellent backgrounds for photographers! The larvae are carnivores and scavengers in debris.
