Tenthredo amoena

Tenthredo amoena measures some 10mm. It does look a lot like other Tenthredo species. It is black with three yellow rings around the body. In some males there are four of these rings, of which two are merged at the end of the body. The antenna is black, except for the first segment, which is yellow. The legs are characteristic: all legs are yellow, but the upper part of the hind legs are black.

The larva is quite beautiful indeed. When found during the day it is usually curled up like in the pictures. It feeds on various members of the St. John's wort-family (Hypericum). Scattered throughout England and Southern Wales. A common species all over Europe, including most of Norway.

This species is also known as Zonuledo amoena. This is a correct name, as Zonuledo is the name of the sub-genus to which this species belongs. The name thus can also be spelled Tenthredo (Zonuledo) amoena.
