Hairy Snail Trochulus hispidus

The Hairy Snail reaches a diameter of some 8 to 9 mm. In Britain there are two species of hairy snails, this is the most common one. The other one is much smaller and reddish and is called the Ruddy Hairy Snail. It is however quite rare. I have not been able to find out what the benefits are of having a hairy shell. Studies in Amsterdam have revealed that it is the most common snail in that city. However studies in Manchester made clear it is quite uncommon there.

Scientifically the Hairy Snails is also known as Trichia hispida.
